Common GST Filing Mistakes Ludhiana Businesses Make (And How to Avoid Them)

Filing on time isn’t the whole story. Every month, businesses across Ludhiana submit their GST returns before the deadline and still end up with a notice, a delayed refund, or a mismatch that takes weeks to sort out. The problem usually isn’t lateness — it’s accuracy.

Here are the three mistakes we see most often, why they happen, and the specific check in Tally that catches each one before you file.

1. GSTIN Mismatches Between Invoices and Returns

A supplier updates their registration details, a typo slips into an invoice, or an old GSTIN gets carried forward from a saved template — and suddenly the GSTIN on your invoice doesn’t match what’s on record. This is one of the most common triggers for a mismatch notice, because it breaks the reconciliation between your return and your supplier’s.

The fix: Before filing, run a GSTIN validation check in Tally against your master list rather than trusting what’s pre-filled on the invoice. A five-minute check now saves weeks of correction later.

2. Incorrect HSN/SAC Code Entries

Wrong or outdated HSN/SAC codes are a small entry error with big consequences — they throw off tax rate calculations, create mismatches between your return and your e-invoices, and can expose you to penalty risk if flagged during scrutiny.

The fix: Cross-check HSN/SAC codes against the current GST rate schedule at least once a quarter, not just when a product is first added. Codes and rates do change, and Tally won’t flag an outdated code on its own — that check has to be manual.

3. Input Tax Credit Claims That Don’t Reconcile

This is the one that causes the most notices. You claim ITC based on your own purchase records, but if your supplier hasn’t filed their return — or has filed it with different figures — your claim won’t reconcile on the GST portal. The mismatch shows up as a discrepancy even though your books are correct.

The fix: Reconcile your ITC claims against GSTR-2B before filing, not after. Tally can flag unmatched entries if you run the comparison proactively — most businesses only find out about the mismatch when the notice arrives.

Why This Matters More Than the Deadline

A return filed on time but full of these errors still generates the same headache as a late filing: notices, correspondence with the department, and refunds sitting in limbo while the mismatch gets resolved. Catching these three issues before you file is faster and cheaper than fixing them after.
